Here is information on different types of teaching degrees. Teaching degrees are offered based on concentrations depending on grade level and subject. For instance:

  • For teachers who want to work with younger kids, a degree in Early Elementary Education is the best program to study. This degree prepares students to teach grades Pre-k through 3rd grade. Some people have a natural talent of working with small children. If this is what you feel you would be best suited for, you should read more information on a degree in Early Childhood Education.
  • If you are interested in working with students in any elementary grade, you can obtain a degree in Elementary Education which will prepare you to work in a career teaching all core subjects to students in grades Kindergarten through Sixth grade.
  • Teachers who plan to teach on the middle school or high school level, routinely obtain a degree in the subject matter they plan to teach with Secondary Education as their major or minor. Most colleges offer a Secondary Education degree focusing on grades 7-12 with a specific subject in mind.

Online Master’s in Teaching Degree

Earning a Bachelors degree in Education is enough to obtain a teaching degree; however, many teachers pursue a Master’s degree. Some states even now require the completion of a Masters degree to teaching in a public school setting. A Master’s degree typically ensures a raise in teacher salary, as well as offers opportunities for specific jobs in the teaching field. For example, if you want to become a principal or a guidance counselor, a Master’s degree is required in most states.

Sometimes, teachers pursue a Master’s degree in a new concentration to give them job options later. A Master’s degree can be obtained online while you work full-time as a teacher. Many colleges and universities across the nation offer convenient online Masters degrees and certificates for working teachers. Graduate students can specialize in Elementary or Secondary Education, Special Education, Library Science, Guidance and Counseling, or Administration.

Numerous colleges have accredited programs that can assist in enhancing a teaching job. View all Online Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Programs.

Steps to Licensure

Teachers in the United States who want to work for the public school system, must obtain a license in the state in which they plan to teach. Before graduating college, students are usually required to complete a semester of student teaching in their area of concentration. Upon completion of a Bachelors degree, teachers who wish to work in the public school system must pass a series of Praxis exams based on specific state requirements. Upon passing the Praxis exams, you will then apply for a teaching license in your state in order to become a certified teacher.

Some states allow teachers to teach for up to 3 years after they’ve completed a Bachelors degree, before obtaining a license. This is an alternative license that is regulated with specific requirements. This gives teachers time to work on passing their Praxis exams and obtaining minimum education requirements not met at the bachelors level. However, this happens on rare occasions, such as a situation in which the school district is not able to find someone to hire who already has a license.

The best plan to ensure you are eligible for a teaching license as soon as you graduate is to major in Education while in college. Once you complete an Education degree, then you will be qualified to take the Praxis exams shortly after graduation. Upon passing those exams, you can apply for a license in your practicing state. Types of Teaching Careers

Teachers can choose to teach for the public school system, private schools, religious schools, or charter schools. Teachers who wish to work with younger children in Pre-k or early primary school will major in Early Childhood Education and those who are interested in teaching in elementary school, but with children a little older, can major in Elementary Education and teach children in Kindergarten through Sixth grade.

Some teachers are better able to deliver material and interact with older children and adolescents. If you want to work with teenagers and make difference in many students’ lives, then teaching Middle of High School might be for you. Secondary teachers get to teach specific subjects in middle or high school such as Algebra, Biology, History, or Spanish. Teachers who are interested in this option have several paths that they can take. Some colleges offer a degree in Secondary Education with a minor in the subject that you plan to teach. You also have the option to major in the area of focus, such as a Bachelors in English, History, or French, with a minor in Secondary Education. Most colleges and universities are required to meet the guidelines set by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. The programs at these college will assist in guiding you as to what classes are needed in order to graduate with eligibility to teach in your state.

Some students might want to focus on Special or Gifted Education in which they will work individually with students who need an Individual Education Plan and accommodations in the classroom. These require specific coursework in college along with state regulated tests that you must pass before applying for a license. Make sure you that you know the requirements for your state and the specific classes needed at your college to be successful in your teaching career.
