Requirements to Teach in Maine

The traditional path to certification in Maine requires the candidate to have a Bachelor's degree, complete an approved teacher preparation program that is typically part of the curriculum for the Bachelor's degree, and pass Praxis exams that demonstrate fundamental abilities in mathematics, writing and reading.

They must demonstrate competency in the subject(s) to be taught by passing the appropriate Praxis Subject Assessments. Online programs have to be appropriately accredited and approved. Maine requires applicants to submit to a criminal background check. Fingerprints are taken through an approved processing company.

Many private schools prefer hiring educators with a state of Maine issued teaching license. Maine has a tiered licensing structure that recognizes highly qualified teachers. New teachers receive a Provisional certificate, valid for two years.

They advance to a Professional certificate, valid for five years, after two years of teaching and completion of new teacher orientation. Pursuing a certificate from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is encouraged. The state of Maine recognizes those educators with a salary supplement that continues each year the certificate is valid.

Scholarships/Financial Aid Available

Only 50% of high school graduates from Maine go to postsecondary education. The rate is among the nation's lowest and puts young people in Maine at a disadvantage. The cost of college often prevents high school seniors in Maine from choosing higher education.

Many scholarships reward athletic and academic achievement. The Mainely Character Scholarship makes character count. It rewards exemplary behavior of an individual and makes education possible for deserving students from Maine.

To be eligible for the Mainely Character Scholarship award, applicants must be residents of Maine. Anyone with a high school diploma and entering the first year of a Title IV eligible postsecondary institution is eligible. A personal interview and a written essay that demonstrates the principles of concern, responsibility, integrity, and courage are used to make an award based on character. It is not a renewable scholarship.

The NEHE Tuition Break Program provides a tuition discount to residents of New England when they enroll in approved out-of-state degree programs of public universities and colleges in the New England states.

Requirements for In-State Tuition

There are not a lot of out-of-state students who attend college in Maine. There are enough to develop guidelines for in-state tuition. Getting in-state tuition favors those who have their heart set on attending college in Maine and willingly delay an application longer than the typical person might be.

Maine is on the harsh end of the gap-year spectrum. It is useless to apply to a university without a one-year history of living in Maine for a purpose other than education. Though the gap-year requirement is harsh, the state only requires 50% financial independence.

Students can accept help from friends and family. When a student is granted in-state status, he or she keeps the status unless something such as being a dependent on someone else's tax return disqualifies them. Maine is a Regional Student Program member with limited agreement of reciprocity among the select Northeastern State.
