To work as a teacher in Maine, you must have at least a bachelor's degree and complete an teacher preparation program that includes educational theory-based courses, seminars and student teaching (internships) in area schools. In addition, you must pass assessment tests like the Praxis II and the PPST (Pre-Professional Skills Test).

University of Maine at Augusta offers various teacher preparation programs in several areas, including secondary education 7-12, early childhood education B-5, early elementary education (K-3), elementary education (K-8), and special education (K-12). Some of these programs are offered jointly at the University of Maine’s Augusta campus and Presque Isle campus; some are also offered through distance learning.
Saint Joseph’s College of Maine offers bachelor’s degree programs in the following areas: education, elementary education, special education and physical education prep program. The programs at Saint Joseph’s are rich in field experiences. University of Maine offers teacher programs at every degree level. Bachelor degree programs cover areas of early childhood education, elementary education, child development and family relations, kinesiology and physical education, secondary education and athletic training.
University of New England offers a bachelor’s degree in elementary education as well as a secondary education program that comes with several areas of concentration. Thomas College offers bachelor degree teaching programs for students looking for initial teaching certification. These programs provide students with extensive student teaching opportunities.
University of Maine also offers several CAEP-accredited master degree programs in areas of educational leadership, elementary education & secondary education, higher education, human development, instructional technology literacy education, kinesiology and physical education, science education, social studies education and special education. Students in Master of Arts or Master of Science programs at UM must also complete a thesis.
University of New England offers master degree programs in education with concentrations in career and tech education; curriculum and instructional strategies; educational leadership; inclusion education; literacy education K-12); and teaching methodologies and concentrations. A variety of master degree teaching programs are also offered at the University of Southern Maine. These programs are aimed at teachers that hold a bachelor’s degree and are interested in advancing their education and adding additional certifications to their credentials.
