In addition completing a bachelor's degree or teaching preparation program, New Mexico teachers must also complete an additional amount of credit hours depending on the field. For instance, teachers in elementary schools must complete, in addition to student teaching, 30-36 credit hours in elementary education. Of these hours, six must be in reading and 24 in specific subject content.

New Mexico State University offers an undergraduate elementary education certification program.
The University of New Mexico offers graduate certification programs in special education specialist; curriculum and instruction; and educational leadership. These programs are for students who want to advance their education beyond the master’s degree but don’t wish to pursue doctoral degrees.

New Mexico Highlands University offers master degrees in education, curriculum and instruction, special education and educational leadership. These graduate programs also offer several areas of concentration. For instance NMHU’s curriculum and instruction major offers emphasis areas in technology education, life science, English, reading, early childhood education and mathematics to name a few.

The University of New Mexico offers master degree programs in health education, physical education, elementary education, secondary education and educational leadership.
