In addition completing a bachelor's degree or teaching preparation program, New Mexico teachers must also complete an additional amount of credit hours depending on the field. For instance, teachers in elementary schools must complete, in addition to student teaching, 30-36 credit hours in elementary education. The most direct means of fulfilling the requirements to become a New Mexico teacher is earning a Bachelor's or Master's degree. It must be obtained from a regionally accredited university or college and include a teacher education program approved by the state.
Requirements to Teach in New Mexico
The aforementioned path is the traditional licensure pathway. All applicants are required to take the New Mexico Teacher Assessments to be certified. It includes the Essential Academic Skills subtests I, II, and III and grade-level specific and professional knowledge exams.
The grade-level specific exams vary according to the subjects and grade-level endorsements being sought. Individuals applying for their initial certification or adding endorsements are required to take appropriate NMTA exams. State law requires those applying for teacher certification to submit to a federal and state background check based on fingerprints.
Newly-licensed teachers are issued Level I certification for Provisional Teachers. Level II is reached by completing a Professional Development Plan, a mentoring program, and a minimum of three years experience with 'Effective' or above ratings. Completion of a Master's degree and three 'Effective' or better yearly evaluations at Level II earns a Level III licensure.

The New Mexico Higher Education Department is the sanctioned authority in charge of New Mexico's financial aid for college. The Department is the best means of navigating the sea of options available. Students with economic needs are eligible for grants and scholarships.
The applicant begins by filling out the FAFSA. It gives access to a large number of scholarships, grants, and loans available to New Mexico students. Factors taken into consideration are the intended major, family income, choice of college, and GPA.
The Legislative Lottery Success Scholarships provide thousands of students with funding for a college education. Students have to be New Mexico residents that are enrolled in a college or university in New Mexico with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Requirements to Qualify for In-State Tuition
The following requirements have to be satisfied to become eligible for in-state tuition.
- Student must reside in New Mexico for the 12 consecutive months preceding the term of the request.
- Be financially independent
- Sign a declaration of intent that relinquishes residency in another state and establishes it in New Mexico
- Overt acts that support intent to permanently establish residency in New Mexico
Financial independence is based on the previous year tax return. Those under 23 must have copies of parents' or guardians' tax form showing the student was not claimed as a dependent. Overt acts that provide evidence of residency include two of the following.
- Parents' or guardians' tax returns from the previous year
- High school transcript that confirms attendance in the past 12 months
- New Mexico ID or driver's license
- Proof of New Mexico income tax payment
- Evidence of New Mexico employment
- Vehicle registration
- Voter registration
- Rental agreement
- Utility bills in the applicant's name
- Other evidence that reasonably supports intent to establish residency
