In addition completing a bachelor's degree or teaching preparation program, New Mexico teachers must also complete an additional amount of credit hours depending on the field. For instance, teachers in elementary schools must complete, in addition to student teaching, 30-36 credit hours in elementary education. Of these hours, six must be in reading and 24 in specific subject content.

Several online master degrees can be earned at Eastern New Mexico University including master of education administration, elementary education, physical education, reading and literacy, career and technical education, secondary education and special education. The secondary and special education programs come in both a licensed and an alternative license version.
New Mexico State University offers an online Master of Arts in Education – Curriculum & Instruction with emphasis on early childhood education. Early technology and learning technologies area also majors available in NMSU’s online programs. They also offer a couple of online M.A.T. programs. The University of New Mexico also has several online teaching programs.
In addition to having an alternative licensure program, Eastern New Mexico University offers certification programs in early childhood education, elementary education, career and technical education, physical education and special education. New Mexico State University offers an undergraduate elementary education certification program.
The University of New Mexico offers graduate certification programs in special education specialist; curriculum and instruction; and educational leadership. These programs are for students who want to advance their education beyond the master’s degree but don’t wish to pursue doctoral degrees.
Eastern New Mexico University offers master degrees in bilingual education, educational administration, educational technology, career and technical education, pedagogy and learning, educational technology and elementary education as well as several minors. New Mexico Highlands University offers master degrees in education, curriculum and instruction, special education and educational leadership. These graduate programs also offer several areas of concentration. For instance NMHU’s curriculum and instruction major offers emphasis areas in technology education, life science, English, reading, early childhood education and mathematics to name a few.

The University of New Mexico offers master degree programs in health education, physical education, elementary education, secondary education and educational leadership.
