Oregon's teaching requirements are very similar to other states in that teacher's must have a baccalaureate degree in a teaching field. Teacher's pursuing certification must also pass the Protecting Student and Civil Rights in the Educational Environment exam, a basic skills exam such as Praxis and a subject matter exam.
In Oregon, teacher education programs usually include a combination of fieldwork and curricula. Coursework frequently includes skills, foundational knowledge, and pedagogy instruction as well as preparing research, design, and implementation of experiences in a variety of fields of study.
Field observations, internships, and student teaching are possible fieldwork components.
Concordia University offers an online childhood education undergraduate program and a M.Ed. program in career and technical education; curriculum and instruction; educational leadership; and special education. Eastern Oregon University has online programs in elementary education, reading endorsement, English for speakers of other languages and an early childhood education program that can be completed in only two years.
The online Master of Teaching online program at EOU was ranked as one of the top in the country by U.S. News & World Report. Students can choose from primary/elementary or middle/high school licensure. Oregon State University has an online master degree in adult education, online Master of Counseling and Master of Education programs.
Master degrees in science or mathematics education are also offered online at OSU. Portland State University and Southern Oregon University offer several online teaching programs as well.
Concordia University offers several different certification programs as well as initial and continuing licensure programs for teachers and administrators. CU also has specialty endorsements in English for speakers of other languages, health and physical education and reading specialist.
Eastern Oregon University has endorsement programs for reading, special education and ESOL as well as a teaching of writing certificate program. Oregon State University has certification programs in agriculture education, music education and physical education. Students completing the physical education program will be licensed to teach physical education to students aged 3 through grade 12. Pacific University offers licensure and endorsement programs in several areas of study.
Bachelor degree programs in elementary education, early childhood education and special education are common in Oregon, as well as several options for a double-degree program that allows students to earn a degree in education and a degree in the field of their choosing. This 50-plus-credit program allows teachers to teach students in grades k-12.
There are several universities offering bachelor degree programs in Christian education, early childhood education (licensure and non-licensure), and secondary education. Concordia offers a degree completion program in early childhood education for students interested in leadership positions in daycares and preschool settings. Students spend the final semester of this 5-semester program completing an internship.
There are multiple options for Master’s in Teaching degrees in Oregon. A M.A.T. program – offered both full and part-time – offers concentrations in elementary and secondary education. Full-time students can complete this program in 11 months. The Master of Education program has concentrations in administration, curriculum and instruction, educational leadership and special education. There are 20 additional emphasis areas within the curriculum and instruction concentration.
A Master of Science in Education degree is also available at several universities as well as MAT concentrations in Early Childhood and Elementary; a Master of Arts in Teaching, Language Arts, Social Studies or Mathematics; and a teacher education program focusing on mathematics or science.
