Oregon Teaching Scholarships and Financial Aid Available

Oregon students have many financial aid avenues to support their educational goals. The Higher Education Coordinating Commission Office of Student Access and Completion administers beneficial state financial aid for Oregonians. It includes the Oregon Opportunity Grant, which is the state's largest need-based grant program. The grant helps pay for college at participating private institutions and public colleges and universities.

The FAFSA is the first order of business in obtaining state and federal aid for career training, college, or graduate school. Oregon Student Assistance Commission Scholarships administers more than 500 private scholarships to students pursuing school beyond high school.

The FAFSA is a requirement to obtain federal funds like Pell Grants and many Oregon funds. It is advised to exhaust all funding opportunities such as work-study, grants, and scholarships that do not require repayment before considering student loans. There is an Oregon Student Aid Application for students who are not eligible for FAFSA resources of federal aid.

Requirements to Qualify for In-State Tuition

Most undergrads are not prepared for the commitment and sacrifice required to become a new Oregon resident. The laws are designed to make it difficult. All universities have to adhere to demanding state laws. Every university interprets them differently. Each institution can define vague terms, assign lesser or greater importance to some topics, and choose its policy. University tuition classification policies are subject to change.

A big presumption to overcome is the move to Oregon is not primarily or solely to attend school. Anyone who attends full-time during the domicile year is disqualified from in-state status. Part-time, defined as no more than eight credit hours, is acceptable.

A gap-year is not required, but it is possible. Candidates will want to be gainfully employed because 51 percent of financial independence is a requirement used to determine the state of residence. Oregon universities need to know a minimum of half of all expenses is paid with the students' money. What counts as 'students' money' is a bit complicated. It must be earned, or what a student is responsible for repaying.
