The state of Utah has a lot to offer for aspiring teachers or teachers wishing to advance their teaching credentials. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, there are about a dozen teaching colleges in Utah where students can obtain the education they need to become licensed teachers in Utah.

Utah has three levels for licensure of teachers working in Utah schools. To obtain a Level I license, the individual must complete a teacher preparation program or have a bachelor's degree in teaching.

For the Level II license, the individual must have a recommendation from the school district and must satisfy all EYE (Entry Years Enhancement) requirements, which include having three year's teaching experience. For the Level III license, the teacher must have a Level II license and be nationally board certified.

  • 35 teaching programs in Utah accredited by CAEP
  • 13 CAEP-accredited Bachelor's degrees
  • 15 CAEP-accredited Master's degrees in Utah

The basic education requirements of becoming a licensed teacher in Utah is possessing a Bachelor's degree and completing a teacher preparation program approved by the state. Many universities and colleges offer joint or blended programs.

A teacher preparation program is usually structured on a foundation of fieldwork and college coursework. The curriculum typically covers classroom management, differentiated instructional strategies, subject-based teaching methods, pedagogical theories, and more. Fieldwork allows individuals the opportunity to apply what they have learned in a classroom setting with students.

Requirements to Teach in Utah

The programs are completed on a college campus or online. In Utah, the programs must hold national accreditation. Periodically, the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation evaluates the programs. There are required tests to pass to become licensed.

A competency exam in the subject matter to be taught is required. The Praxis II test in the area(s) to be licensed can be taken. A clear background check determined via fingerprints is required.

It has Borrower Benefits programs that are among the best in the country. The Utah Navajo Fund receives oil royalties from leases northeast of Montezuma Creek as well as Mexican Water, Red Mesa, and Aneth. The agency administers the funds for Utah Navajo families and communities for programs that include higher education.

The State of Utah sponsors the Utah 529 Educational Savings Plan. It is a 'direct-sold' plan that deals directly with the UESP. No broker-dealer or financial adviser has to be involved.

UtahMentor provides a wealth of financing higher education and college selection information. It is meant to prepare students for the K-16 planning transition by helping parents and students make informed college decisions. UtahMentor provides a give that gives step-by-step instructions for searching for scholarships and financial aid. Students can fill out the FAFSAfor federal aid information.

Requirements to Qualify for In-State Tuition

Obtaining in-state status in Utah is straightforward and palatable. It is also unforgiving and strict. First, one must commit to Utah by demonstrating strong ties to the state. It is not necessary to be as financially independent as nearly every other state requires. Those hoping to attend college, work a bit, and receive substantial help from others may find Utah the place to be. Forethought that requires detailed planning, executing, and following through is a must.

Proof of relinquished domicile ties includes voter registration, driver's license, and vehicle registration, if applicable. Financial independence is demonstrated by federal tax returns of parents or guardians that do not claim the student as a dependent. Single students who are 23 years old or younger provide copies of their federal tax return for the year before the academic term for which in-state tuition is being sought. Proof of physical presence in the state for a minimum of 12 consecutive months before the first scheduled day of classes is required to be considered a Utah resident.
