Requirements to Teach in West Virginia

Holding a Bachelor's degree, completion of a teacher preparation program approved by the state, and passing the required content exams are requirements for a West Virginia teaching certificate.

The three Praxis Series tests prospective West Virginia educators have to pass are the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators, Principles of Learning and Teaching, and appropriate subject assessments for the endorsements sought.

The Core exam measures basic reading, writing, and math skills. The PLT assesses specific skills to classroom leadership and teaching. Content-specific exams test content-area knowledge that is specific to the endorsements for which candidates plan to apply. A 2.5 GPA better must be maintained as an undergraduate and 3.0 for graduates.

Scholarships and Financial Aid Available

The FAFSA is the first step in seeking financial aid for college. Grants funded through university, college, state, and federal resources are awarded to financial need students. Often they are renewable. The FAFSA has to be submitted each year to qualify. Scholarships that are funded from private, university and college, local community, state, and federal resources are typically awarded without financial need as a factor. Each has selection criteria and an application process of its own. Recipients are selected based on athletics, academic achievement, exceptional talent, heritage, community service, and career interests.

A financial award letter received from a university or college outlines the type of financial aid the student is qualified to receive. The process for applying may vary based on the type of loan being sought. Taking out a Federal Direct Loan requires completion of the Master Promissory Note before funds are disbursed. Parents who take out a Direct PLUS loan have to sign the PLUS Application/Promissory Note. The promissory notes to be signed are usually sent with the award letter.

As of July 1, 2019, West Virginia students can enroll in a local community college, and the state will pay the tuition to earn a training certificate or Associate's degree if the student can pass a drug test each semester.

Requirements to Qualify for In-State Tuition

A difference of over $13,000 between out-of-state and in-state tuition in West Virginia during a four-year college career. It is among the most difficult states to earn in-state tuition. There is a one-year domicile period that a student cannot attend school while living in West Virginia. Employment for at least 30 hours per week in the state is also a requirement. There are a limited number of days to be absent from West Virginia during the domicile period.

The financial component is very strict during the domicile period and after being granted in-state status. All expenses must be paid by the student applying for in-state tuition. Ties to other states must be cut. Proof of plans to reside and remain in West Virginia for reasons other than school, and the ability to support oneself is required.
